Internet usage is expanding rapidly in Thailand. The cost for setting up internet access is low in comparison to many other countries (from 5,000 Baht for the modem and up to 30,000 Baht per month). The quality of the provided internet service is usually sufficient in larger cities.

Dial-up connection
Low internet users have the option to pay for a dial-up account. You can purchase packages for this service at mobile phone shops or at convenience stores such as 7-11. When purchasing such a package you receive a dial-up number, a security PIN and a limited time of usage.
Broadband ADSL Connection
Broadband or ADSL is available in most cities in Thailand. Rural areas however, may not have access to a broadband connection. There are usually other options available such as satellite and fibreglass internet.
To get connected to broadband, you will need to contact one of the broadband providers and provide following documents:
- Passport
- Valid visa
- A copy of work permit (if applicable)
Wireless internet access
Wi-fi is available in most Thai hotels and larger restaurants. Prices vary depending on the location, though you will probably be able to connect to many for free.
Many restaurants and bars will ask you to buy a drink if you wish to sit and use their internet connection. Generally the more modern the bar or restaurant, the more likely they are to have a free Wi-Fi internet policy.
Be careful when viewing personal and banking information over wireless internet connections, unless you are sure they are secure. Many public (and especially free) wireless connections can leave your computer vulnerable to hackers.
Internet cafés in Thailand
Internet cafés are popular and common in Thailand, especially in major cities. They offer cheap internet access at hourly rates, and usually serve snacks, drinks and coffee as well.
Internet cafés in tourist areas generally charge 0.5 to 3 Baht per minute. If you are planning just checking your emails quickly, beware that many have a "minimum charge" that is about 10 minutes of use.
Internet cafés are especially popular with young people in Thailand, many of whom use them as meeting points and hangout spots. While internet cafés are excellent places for tourists to check their email and browse the web, long-term residents should arrange for home internet access.
